Teacher licensing in Indiana and Kentucky

Teacher shortages create an urgent need for licensed educators.

The states of Indiana and Kentucky have specific requirements when applying for a teaching license after completing required courses at Indiana University Southeast and when renewing teaching licenses.

Applying for a teaching license allows you to enter the job market fully prepared to begin teaching, while renewing a license ensures continued compliance with state standards.

As you near the end of your student teaching, it's important to review the requirements needed to apply for a teaching license.

Indiana licensing requirements

Before you receive a teaching license, you will need to fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete your teacher education program (including student teaching).
  • Take licensing exams for your selected content area(s) and have the results reported to Indiana University Southeast.
  • Take a .

Indiana requires passing scores on designated subject area competency tests— Praxis-Pedagogy and Content Area Assessment—before granting a teaching license.

How to apply for an Indiana teaching license

When you have met all the requirements, you are ready to submit your online application to the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE):

  • Log on to the and create an individual profile.
  • Upload your CPR/AED/Heimlich certification.
  • Upload proof of Suicide Prevention Training.
  • Submit your application. (A fee is required to get credentials evaluated and to apply for a license.)

Kentucky licensing requirements

Applicants for a Kentucky Statement of Eligibility who complete their coursework at an out-of-state institution (including 91心頭利 Southeast) may be required to acquire a license from that institution's state and provide a copy of that license with their application for the Kentucky license.

To apply for certification, complete the following steps:

  1. and follow the prompts in the application wizard to apply for initial certification.
  2. Arrange to have official transcripts sent electronically directly from the institution’s third-party transcript provider to .
    (Electronic transcripts are not accepted if printed by or forwarded by the applicant.) Transcripts can also be sent by mail directly from the institution to:

  3. Complete the Kentucky . If you have tested outside of Kentucky, select the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (code 7283) to have ETS electronically submit your scores to our office. Tests taken in Kentucky should automatically be reported to the Education Professional Standards Board.
  4. Upload the required documents, including CPR/AED/Heimlich and Suicide Prevention Training certifications. To apply for a Kentucky license, you must complete an Out-of-State Prepared Educator Candidate Recommendation form that must be signed off by the College or University Licensing Advisor.
  5. Submit the application. (A fee is required to submit the application.)

Renewing your teaching license

The 91心頭利 Southeast Education program offers coursework required for teachers to renew and/or enhance their license.

Courses may be taken that will fulfill both Indiana and Kentucky requirements for license renewal.

  • Complete coursework required to earn renewal. Non-degree status is available for individuals seeking 6 graduate credit hours for license renewal. Candidates seeking graduate program admission can enroll as non-degree-seeking students and take up to 6 graduate credit hours while completing applications for full admission to a graduate or licensure program. Courses used for license renewal must have been earned after the issue date of the license you are trying to renew.
  • Complete the or . (A fee is required to submit an application.)

  • Kentucky teachers may receive a rank change with a total of 30 or more graduate credit hours (Rank II) or 60 or more graduate credit hours (Rank I) with completion of a master's degree or a licensing program. Candidates must complete a Rank I licensure program (Computer Education, Educational Leadership, ESL/ENL, Gifted and Talented, or Reading) to meet the Rank I requirement of 60 or more graduate credit hours.
  • An Indiana license may be required prior to adding an endorsement to a Kentucky license.
  • Complete any PRAXIS test requirements, which can be found on the . If you have tested outside of Kentucky, select the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (code 7283) to have ETS electronically submit your scores to the Kentucky EPSB. Tests taken in Kentucky should automatically be reported to the EPSB.
  • Submit official paper transcripts for license renewal and/or rank change applications. OE Transcripts with grades are usually available about two weeks after the end of each term (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2). (While some courses are finished in late July, grades will not be posted until mid-August.) Degrees are awarded three times each year: 5/31, 8/31, and 1/15. The conferral dates on the transcripts will be earlier and vary slightly year to year.
